Ready?

My expectation is Ready Player One is the most original, progressive Hollywood film in ages and its going to  inspire all of the change and gimmick copying for the next few years. Like Avatar, Jurassic Park, Lucas' Star Wars, Terminator, Jaws, Back to the Future, Toy Story & all of the big game-changing special effects hits.

Negatives: Every studio will throw together all of the characters they own or can lease. We will get a lot of tempting but ultimately cynical and stupid popcorn battles like Avengers vs X-Men or Kingdom Hearts meets Star Wars or maybe that long-requested "Jason vs Freddy vs blank vs etc." project.

Positives: Hopefully we start thinking about supercomputers, virtual reality, consumerist brainwashing and transcending the digital realm to improve this material reality. We will finally move away from remakes and properly contextualize these films as video game fanboy fare. And none of these films will probably match the surprising, absurdist, surreal mix of random characters as this one. Hopefully this will finally keep family/fanboy film culture out of production of serious adult and children film genres. These recent offerings of gritty 70s realist superhero films have been valiant but ultimately a weird experiment that is was really fulfilled a decade ago in The Dark Knight.
