For me personally "As Director", I don't want to make too much more than the departments I'm chiefing. Those people all work just as passionately & creatively as the director if the director is good. The director's proper rule - if I'm going on the films I think are incredible works - is to make final decisions for each production department. She/He is the surrogate for the audience, having first mental idea of what the finished film is. He could be delivering a film the producer has in mind but can't realize (Spielberg producing Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist), is busy producing multiple afforable films (Roger Corman, Thalberg), or an "auteur" producer might churn out a personally realized production sporadically like Dino DeLaurentiis .
But there is no real auteurist producer or actor or screenwriter unless they direct. Because only the director has final say on every department. Some actors have dictated important changes or commandeered the production from the director. But the director is still the one person who is thinking about the edit, watching the schedule, looking at dailies, directing the ADR, looking at boards, reading all of the script, petting actor ego's for a performance and still remains the least visible part of the on-screen action. They have a rough job that can't be undersold.
But this Freemason-esque/Satanic-Christian cult idea of the "Lone Self" capitalizing, utilizing, minimizing and exploiting the cast & crew is bullshit. The spiritual messages of so much cinema to date has been a pessimistic colonized defeatist "dog eat dog" private moral tragedy. No longer! Cinema was designed to bring people together to forget their troubles and return stronger to cure them. How is that possible when 90% of films are denied a "popular" release?
Streaming is too invasive, manufactured, conservative and corporatized. How much truly independent content gets sufficient backing or publicity? If they have either they are typically backed by an industry insider who is securing a deal with a major and probably using their crew and studio resources to get the film made. Not that this makes the film bad or their directors lesser auteurs, but thats not an indie film. A truly independent film is not beholden to a collective interest outside of its crew and sometimes the audience made through a "cult film" repore. Because they are denied the protected studio train of being propagandized and re-sold or awarded popular awards. Thats why its so heinous when Hollywood buys intellectual property made from the indie circuit or video market. Hollywood effectively killed those genres of distribution and left us with glorified TV movies, but now a bankrupt & brainless studio system (really just the demonic Disney) are pimping post-modern classics like Evil Dead, Star Wars, Toxic Avenger, Godzilla, Batman, G.I. Joe and totally abusing them by reworking them into a homogenized genre of corporate mascots with the same bland faux-Leftist conservative ideals about Nazi art and American propaganda. Those films are literally Orwellian brainwashing mechanisms. They are exactly what The Matrix predicted, yet they pretend to be cousins of The Matrix?
And Fight Club and Ichi the Killer and Toxic Avenger. The people making films now are infantile fanboys who can't comprehend an adult movie with depth, realism, neo-structure. Its time to reappraise what the "modern classics" are. Many old films don't deserve the title in our new present. And many old films were ignored but are supremely sublime and often pioneering AND influential. But we shouldn't just shadow and mimick these films. Thats the cop-out, anti-art "pop" solution. We comment on these shared stories, bend them, unravel them, reboot their components and start a brand new avenue. And lets not be beholden to old cinematic "universes". Lets not adapt them from the time they come from. Lets add more universes and timelines. There could've been one Captain Kirk and we would be fine (in fans' hearts, Shatner is the only Kirk anyway)
The world is starving for new productive content that helps us stop hurting ourselves and others. All I see is fake fighting & capitalist immoral conspiracies dressed as rational social-climbing theatrics. How are Avengers movies any different from Donald Trump's cabinet? Compare to the DC films which are so hyper-real (to a graphic novel level) and skeptical and morally complex, that you can't take them as propaganda but critiques and commentary on society as a whole. Sure its heavy on the same idiotic and toxic Christian tropes and Luciferian worship as Disney's films, but its more ironic and depressed. Zack Snyder presents a world structure that is in danger and seeking radical saving and he does it in safe commercial ways but also subverts them and destroys them typically. Superman and Batman are level players who see Wonder Woman as a level player; Contrasting to Disney's Captain America and Iron Man who have some homoerotic post-WW2 vaudeville act with flat cable soap opera acting. At least I can compare DC's films to GOOD HBO.
Enough of this rant.
